Cloudflare reports 750 interns hired toward 1,111 goal, shipping AI, post-quantum and BGP work
Cloudflare reports that one year after announcing a goal of hiring up to 1,111 interns in 2026, it has hosted 750 internships across 48 teams in nine offices. The post is corporate and HR news, not a security incident, and describes no threat activity, vulnerability or breach. Interns used AI tooling to speed up onboarding and shipped work to internal teams and customers. Cloudflare says many interns will return full-time and that the program will grow next year.
Technical Details
- Cache Transcoding: built by an intern, it compresses eligible assets with Zstandard in the primary proxy before disk write. Initial testing showed an average on-disk size of about one third of the original.
- EmDash 1.0: the CMS that runs the Cloudflare blog, released during Birthday Week. A former intern is its second maintainer.
- Post-quantum migration: Cloudflare targets 2029 for post-quantum security. Interns helped build CryptoLabe, an internal AI tool that finds cryptography in the codebase and maps its dependencies. They also added per-connection post-quantum visibility to Logpush, Log Explorer and HTTP Traffic Analytics.
- BGP research: an intern measured network rewriting of the BGP ORIGIN attribute on roughly 70% of observed paths and advocated removing ORIGIN from route selection. She also tracked adoption of RFC 9234, which lets routers reject route leaks.
- Other Birthday Week launches with intern contributions: Protected Quick Tunnels, a Rust target for wasm-bindgen in Workers, BEACON real-user measurements, and rebuilt Cloudflare Containers for agent sandboxes.
