Akamai: Online Scam Detections Double to 6.4 Million per Quarter, Overtaking Phishing
Akamai's latest State of the Internet (SOTI) report, using data from partner Bolster AI, found that online scam detections doubled between July 2025 and June 2026, surpassing phishing for the first time. Roughly 6.4 million online scams were recorded in April-June 2026, versus 3.2 million in July-September 2025, covering fake stores, investment scams, tech support scams and payment fraud. Phishing detections also rose 61%, fueled by reusable phishing kits, industrialized infrastructure and AI. Separately, the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) reported on October 28 that over 80% of US scam victims experienced suicidal ideation, worsened by "institutional ghosting" and follow-on recovery scams.
Detalhes técnicos
- AI-generated dynamic templates, multilingual lures and condition-aware evasion have cut the average phishing attack lifespan by more than 50%, from 48 days (Q4 2025) to 22 days (Q2 2026).
- Akamai CTO Patrick Sullivan highlighted abuse of autonomous AI agents and synthetic identities for business logic abuse and zero-click data exfiltration.
- ITRC data: nearly 9 in 10 consumer scam victims who sought help were never contacted back; 67.2% were made to feel at fault; 78.9% paid a third party promising recovery of stolen funds.
Remediação
Akamai recommends treating fraud as a cross-functional cybersecurity function rather than an isolated financial one, and using AI-assisted automated indicator analysis, infrastructure clustering and evidence collection to compress investigations from days to under an hour.
