UK scraps national digital ID scheme but continues GOV.UK One Login, digital wallet and 80+ credential programmes

The UK government has scrapped its national digital ID scheme, but officials told the Public Accounts Committee on 20 October 2026 that the underlying identity infrastructure remains in development. Work continues on GOV.UK One Login, the Gov Wallet and the digital identity trust framework, with more than 80 document types earmarked for the wallet, including proof of benefits, driving test certificates and DBS certificates. A testing environment is open for private-sector providers to integrate with the wallet, with further testing planned for December and a national digital driving licence rollout targeted for 2027. MPs raised privacy concerns about consent and data sharing between departments. Officials conceded that government departments can already share data without asking permission and that the consent strategy is not yet finished. One Login officials said it is not a "big data lake", stores identity data separately and issues no single identifier. This is policy and privacy news with no reported security incident, vulnerability or threat activity.
