DOE commits $5B in loans to Constellation to uprate 11 nuclear reactors, with added power largely bought by Google, Meta and Amazon

The Trump administration's Department of Energy is giving Constellation Energy $5 billion in loans to add 1.1 GW of capacity at eight nuclear plants by uprating 11 existing reactors. Most or all of the added output from seven of the facilities has already been bought by Google, Meta or Amazon to supply AI data centers. The loan commitment is not yet finalized. Constellation says it could lower financing costs for projects on which it has already committed more than $7 billion for 1,080 MW. The DOE claims the loans support affordable power for households, but there is no evidence of lower residential rates, and Constellation would not confirm the claim. This is energy and business news with no direct cyber threat component.

Detalhes técnicos

  • Plants: Braidwood, Byron, Clinton, Dresden, LaSalle and Quad Cities (Illinois), Calvert Cliffs (Maryland) and Limerick (Pennsylvania).
  • Google is the confirmed buyer for the Pennsylvania plant and four Illinois plants, Amazon for the Maryland plant, and Meta effectively for all of Clinton.
  • Uprates typically involve more highly enriched uranium and equipment upgrades to handle higher power levels.
