A new white paper from Careerminds, conducted with Censuswide, surveyed 595 US HR professionals and 547 US people managers and found a disconnect between confidence in employee reskilling potential and actual hiring practices for AI-related roles. While 92% of HR professionals and 88% of people managers believe existing employees could be reskilled for AI jobs, 51% of HR professionals and 47% of people managers report their organizations are hiring externally instead, compared to only 42% redeploying existing staff. The study attributes this gap partly to limited visibility into employee skill sets, cited as a barrier by 43% of HR professionals and 34% of managers. Industry response varies, with technology and telecom favoring external hiring by 15% over redeployment, while media and entertainment is the only sector where redeployment matches or exceeds external hiring. Research from The Josh Bersin Company cited in the report notes external hiring can cost three to five times more and take up to 20 days longer than internal reskilling.
