Users deploy AI coding agents such as Claude Code to strip ads, ACR tracking and bloatware from smart TVs via dumbtv and cleanyourtv
A growing number of developers and consumers are using AI coding agents, chiefly Claude Code, to remove sponsored ads, tracking features and preinstalled bloatware from smart TVs. Two GitHub projects, dumbtv (Muzzammil Yasin Sabuwala) and cleanyourtv (Gathin T.), package this approach. Cleanyourtv reportedly spread to a few thousand users within two days across Xiaomi, TCL, Sony, Fire TV and LG devices. The trend targets automatic content recognition (ACR) and ad-driven data monetization, and could disrupt the smart TV advertising industry if it goes mainstream. This is consumer-driven device customization rather than a malicious campaign, but it carries operational risk, including at least one reported bricked Android TV.
Technical Details
- Cleanyourtv works over Wi-Fi on Android TV and Google TV, removes vendor packages (for example 25 Xiaomi packages) and installs a replacement launcher. It does not require root access and allows a factory reset.
- Dumbtv is driven by pointing an AI agent at the GitHub repository. It has been tested end-to-end on Fire TV Edition and on Android/Google TV from Sony, TCL, Philips, Hisense, Xiaomi and Shield. It was coded with Deepseek V4.1 Flash, Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5.
- Reported risks: agents may disable important packages or break the device, one user bricked an Android TV, another got stuck midway on a Fire TV, and Claude sometimes refused simple "hack my TV" prompts.
- Both projects are described as works in progress.
Remediation
- Treat these AI-driven modifications as experimental and back up or know the factory-reset procedure before attempting them.
- Lower-risk alternatives for Android-based TVs are the launcher replacement apps ATV Launcher, Projectivy Launcher and FLauncher.
