OpenAI adds PIN and biometric-protected Locked Chats to ChatGPT across consumer and enterprise plans
OpenAI announced on 2026-10-20 a Locked Chats feature for ChatGPT. It lets users hide sensitive conversations behind a four-digit PIN, or Face ID / Touch ID on supported devices, for cases where others can see their screen or handle their device. The feature is a local privacy control, not a security boundary: OpenAI states it does not provide end-to-end encryption or a separate encrypted vault. It also does not change retention or the "Improve the model for everyone" setting. The rollout began Tuesday, so it may not yet be live for all users. Technical Details
- Locked chats move to a dedicated "Locked Chats" section, separate from regular history, pinned conversations and search results.
- With Memory enabled, Locked Chats keeps its own separate memory. Messages sent after locking update that memory but not regular Memory, so information from locked chats should not leak into regular chats.
- Locking does not remove information ChatGPT remembered before the chat was locked.
- Resetting the PIN permanently deletes all locked chats, files and other content protected by the previous PIN.
- Not supported for temporary chats, archived chats, group chats, chats created from a shared link, chats with scheduled tasks, or chats with meeting recordings.
- Available on ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans, but not on ChatGPT for Healthcare.
