Ramp data shows enterprise AI spending flatlining as OpenAI and Anthropic price cuts compress revenue growth

A Ramp report cited by TechCrunch finds corporate AI spending plateaued in late summer 2026 even as token volumes rose, with token spend growing only 1.5% across August and September versus 42% month-over-month in July. Ramp lead economist Ara Kharazian attributes the stall not to weak demand but to price competition: OpenAI halved API prices for GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna in September, and Anthropic cut pricing for Fable 5.1 and Opus 5.5, a move the company said in a filing reduced revenue growth by about $600 million. Spending is highly concentrated in venture-backed, high-growth tech firms, with the top 1% just below $10,000 per employee per month, median firms at $12-$15 and the top 10% at $600-$1,000. Buyers are also becoming thriftier through model routers, budget controls and lightweight tools such as Jev, while cheap or open models from Meta, Nvidia and Chinese and US vendors add further pressure. October saw a partial re-acceleration of 8.9% between September 23 and October 23, but the data lands as Anthropic nears its IPO with a reported valuation drop from $2 trillion to $1.2-$1.3 trillion and OpenAI cutting its proposed valuation to $1.25 trillion (bloomberg.com, via techcrunch.com). This is market and business reporting with no security incident, vulnerability or threat activity, and therefore no defensive action is implied.
