Trend Micro exposes global 'task scam' industry: fake job platforms drain victims via escalating crypto deposits
Trend Micro published research (Unmasking Task Scams) on task scams, a fast-growing fraud model in which fake online job offers lure victims into repetitive, gamified digital tasks and then extract funds through escalating deposit demands. Operators impersonate legitimate staffing firms and digital marketing agencies and use SMS, WhatsApp, Telegram and fake websites to build credibility. Victims lose from hundreds to hundreds of thousands of dollars each, and payments are made in cryptocurrency, which obscures the money trail and facilitates international laundering. In a Trend survey of more than 6,500 consumers, 39% of those who were scammed realized it only after losing a significant amount. Some task scams are linked to larger criminal operations involving forced scam labor and human trafficking in Southeast Asia, although this is not confirmed in every case.
Technical Details
- Gamified scam platforms use VIP levels, reward streaks and achievement incentives to keep victims depositing funds.
- Infrastructure mapping identified hundreds of lookalike domains registered through high-risk registrars, as well as SMS blasting services used for delivery.
- Forensic analysis of cryptocurrency wallets showed one wallet receiving over US $187,000 in under two months and another linked to more than US $1.2 million in transactions.
- The researchers also engaged directly with scammers as part of the work.
Remediation
- Organizations should make recruitment practices transparent and educate job seekers on how to recognize legitimate communications.
- Infrastructure providers such as domain registrars and SMS blasting services need to address abuse of their services.
- Trend promotes ScamCheck with Scam Radar (iOS and Android) to flag scam tactics in real time.
