Microsoft Introduces Windows 11 Cloud Rebuild Feature for Remote OS Recovery
Microsoft has rolled out Windows 11 Cloud Rebuild, a new feature within the Windows Recovery Environment that lets users restore corrupted operating systems directly over the internet, eliminating the need for bootable USB media. Unlike standard resets that can preserve local data, Cloud Rebuild performs a clean, data-wiping reinstallation, downloading fresh OS images and matching device drivers. This is intended for scenarios such as preparing a device for resale or administrators recovering unbootable workstations without manual deployment. Because the process erases local storage, users relying on BitLocker or Device Encryption must retrieve recovery keys beforehand, and those without cloud backups should extract files via a WinPE environment first. The feature can be triggered from Settings > System > Recovery, or automatically via the advanced recovery menu after repeated boot failures, and requires a stable internet connection (Ethernet recommended) to complete.
This is a product feature announcement rather than a security incident; it has no direct threat implications but is relevant to IT administrators planning recovery and data-protection procedures.
