Discord Rebuilds Desktop Client in Rust and GPUI, Dropping Electron for Lower Memory Use
Discord is rebuilding its desktop client from the ground up in Rust, eliminating the legacy Electron application wrapper and adopting GPUI, a high-performance, GPU-accelerated interface framework originally engineered by Zed Industries for its code editor. Discord engineers have developed server infrastructure and audio systems in Rust since 2018, and the new architecture extends this to the full client, with visual styling kept identical to the current app while embedded platform WebViews continue to render ancillary features such as YouTube sharing. Early benchmarks show the Rust-based client idling at roughly 290 MB of memory, a steep reduction from legacy Electron client instances that could balloon beyond several gigabytes under heavy multitasking. Discord is also restructuring its mobile strategy, phasing out React Native on iOS and Android while keeping native mobile interfaces and sharing core business logic written in Rust between desktop and mobile. This is a product engineering and performance announcement with no associated security vulnerability, exploitation, or threat activity.
Detalhes técnicos
Co-founder and CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy confirmed the rebuild on X, clarifying that the UI layer is GPUI rather than the more commonly assumed Rust-based alternative Tauri, meaning the client is fully native rather than relying on a system webview for its main interface (tbreak.com, hwbusters.com). Discord has not announced a public release date, saying only that it hopes to bring the new client into user testing soon, so the current Electron-based app remains in use for now (windowsreport.com, technobezz.com).
