Walmart launches Agent Gateway MCP server and Agent Profiles controls for AI shopping agents as Amazon blocks them

1 fonte(s) · 1 atualização(ões) · publicado 21/10/2026 16:30 · coletado há 1 dia

Walmart announced an Agent Gateway, an MCP server that lets approved AI agents search its inventory and make purchases for shoppers, covering Walmart and Sam's Club. The announcement came as Amazon began blocking AI agents from making purchases, and as various travel and booking sites lock agents out entirely. CEO John Furner presented the move at the Masters of Scale Summit. It is product news with security-relevant design choices (delegated authorization, spending caps, agent-specific terms) and no reported incident or threat activity.

Detalhes técnicos

  • Agent Gateway uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), originally created by Anthropic, to connect approved agents to Walmart's catalog and checkout.
  • Shoppers can buy usual brands or items without sharing personal information or purchase history directly with the agent.
  • Agent Profiles (rolling out the following month) give each agent a dedicated profile linked to the customer's account. Agent purchases are shown separately from the customer's own. Customers can require approval for every transaction or authorize purchases up to a spending limit, and can delete a profile at any time.
  • Walmart's agent terms state that agents cannot act beyond the shopper's intent, cannot access payment information, and may access only the data needed for the task. Non-compliant agents will be blocked. The returns process applies even when an agent misbehaves.
  • Walmart already has a partnership with Meta's Muse and integrations with ChatGPT, Gemini and others.
