Tesla plans Cybercab expansion beyond Austin amid NHTSA compliance probe and reduced robotaxi metrics

Tesla said on its Q3 earnings call that it will expand Cybercab service from Austin to Dallas next month and to other cities by the end of 2026. It also plans to sell Cybercabs to fleet operators by year-end. CFO Vaibhav Taneja said Tesla wants to "own transportation of any kind on Earth". The expansion could put Tesla in direct competition with Waymo, which has more than 4,000 robotaxis in over a dozen US cities. This is business and regulatory news with no cyber threat content.

Detalhes técnicos

  • NHTSA opened an investigation in September into whether the Cybercab complies with federal motor vehicle safety standards. The vehicle lacks features the standards currently require, such as a brake pedal and side mirrors.
  • Tesla replaced the "Cumulative Paid Robotaxi Miles" chart in its shareholder letter with "Cumulative Unsupervised Robotaxi Miles". The earlier chart had shown a 36% decline from Q1 to Q2, so the change reduces visibility into paid usage.
  • Ashok Elluswamy said the remaining bottlenecks are "not purely regulatory" but driven by AI software capability. The service does not yet operate on highways or in certain conditions.
  • Elon Musk said robotaxi revenue will not be noticeable in Tesla's financials until Q2 2027.
