Anthropic has acquired Opaque Systems, a startup whose technology lets sensitive data be used in AI systems while the underlying hardware keeps it protected (confidential computing). Opaque announced the deal last week and said its team is joining Anthropic. Financial terms were not disclosed. The company has been winding down its operations and has not said what that means for existing customers. Opaque began as a UC Berkeley RISELab research project. Earlier this year it raised a $24 million Series B at a $300 million valuation, and it listed Anthropic, ServiceNow and Accenture as customers.
