Infoblox demonstrates MCP integration linking Tenable vulnerability findings to network identity via Claude Code
Infoblox published a vendor blog showing how its Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server lets AI assistants correlate Tenable vulnerability findings with Infoblox DNS, DHCP and IPAM data. In a lab, the author connected Claude Code to both platforms and ran three analyst-style workflows. These were risk-ranked asset triage, identity gap analysis and a MAC-to-vulnerability pivot. This is product and use-case content with no new threat, incident or exploited vulnerability. It is relevant to defenders mainly as an example of context-driven vulnerability prioritization.
Detalhes técnicos
- Triage: Claude resolved the Engineering Subnet (10.20.30.0/24, 57 Tenable assets) and counted active critical findings from Tenable's findings index rather than asset-level counters. Ranking was by Asset Criticality Rating (ACR) first. A domain controller (ad-dc01, ACR 7) had 65 active criticals including Log4Shell. The vCenter and ESXi management hosts had open critical VMware advisories. srv-lnx08 had unpatched PwnKit but no Infoblox DNS record or DHCP reservation.
- Identity gaps: 12 assets lacked a MAC address in Tenable and 9 of those also lacked a hostname. Infoblox resolved 6 of them. One ESXi host (10.20.30.26) was unknown to both systems. All 12 were unauthenticated scan targets, pointing to a credential coverage gap.
- MAC pivot: MAC 00:50:56:b1:2d:9e mapped to srv-app02 (10.20.30.56), a Windows Server 2019 host with ACR 9 that had never had an authenticated scan. Roughly two years of Windows patching was missing (June 2024 to August 2026). 18 of 21 critical findings had resurfaced, suggesting reimaging or a snapshot rollback. MongoBleed, a remotely triggerable pre-authentication issue, was verified and prioritized above the Critical backlog.
- The MCP workflows query the Infoblox MCP Server and Tenable Hexa AI MCP Server directly at question time. They do not require the existing event-driven Infoblox-Tenable integration.
Remediação
- Add scan credentials for ESXi and vCenter hosts so Tenable can resolve identity and improve finding fidelity.
- Treat assets missing from IPAM, and unnamed hypervisors, as security findings in their own right.
- Verify whether hosts with many resurfaced findings were reimaged or rolled back before investing in patching.
- Re-validate ACR values for high-impact assets such as domain controllers.
