India's DoT SIM-binding rules to restrict WhatsApp, Telegram and other messaging accounts without an active registered SIM from January 1, 2027

1 fonte(s) · 1 atualização(ões) · publicado 23/10/2026 09:41 · coletado há 15 horas

India's Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has set December 31, 2026 as the compliance deadline for messaging platforms to keep accounts bound to the active SIM of the registered mobile number. Restrictions may begin on January 1, 2027. The directive names WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal, Snapchat, Arattai, ShareChat, Josh and JioChat, although reports differ on the current status of Snapchat and Signal. The DoT says persistent sessions let criminals misuse Indian numbers after the SIM is removed, deactivated or taken abroad, enabling cross-border fraud, impersonation of officials and pressure-to-pay scams. The actual effect will depend on how each platform implements the rules, so an immediate universal shutdown is not expected.

Detalhes técnicos

  • Today, accounts verified by an SMS code stay usable over Wi-Fi after the SIM is removed. The new rules require an ongoing link between the account and an active SIM on the device.
  • CNBC TV18 reports suggest the requirement also covers eSIM profiles. What matters is whether the registered number stays active and available for verification.
  • The directives are issued under the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, 2024.
  • Secondary phones, tablets and devices without the registered SIM may be restricted, and so may travelers who swap in a local SIM.
  • The original guidance set web session logouts at no more than six hours. Later updates describe a risk-based approach instead of mandatory six-hour disconnections for everyone.
  • Verification frequency, linked-device behavior and account restoration procedures are still unspecified and depend on each platform.

Remediação

  • Keep registered numbers active.
  • Monitor official platform announcements.
  • Review account settings before changing SIMs while traveling.
