X rolls out intrusive pointing-hand nudge urging users to promote posts, drawing user backlash
X users reported over roughly 24 hours that a large pointing hand appears over the "promote" button while they compose a post. The prompt has irritated many users, and some say it triggers on phrases such as "engagement farming". X has not commented or explained the change. Commentators linked the tactic to growth practices associated with Nikita Bier, X's former head of product who left in August. On Monday Peter Sellis, formerly of Snap and Discord, announced he has taken over as X's product chief, though it is unclear whether the hand is his doing. This is product and UX news with no security impact.
