OpenAI unveils GPT-6 Cyber, an AI model that found 81 Firefox flaws and built exploits for 948 Linux kernel bugs
OpenAI announced GPT-6 Cyber, a model it says discovered 81 previously unknown high-severity vulnerabilities in Mozilla Firefox and produced working local privilege escalation exploits for 948 distinct Linux kernel flaws. In the kernel research the model flagged 2,308 potential issues and reproduced 1,724 of them, with the 948 exploited cases allowing an unprivileged user to obtain root. On the ExploitGym benchmark it exploited 48.5% of vulnerabilities, against 32.1% for GPT-5.6 Cyber, and OpenAI raised its internal rating to "Critical" cybersecurity capability under its Preparedness Framework. The model is not publicly available: access is limited to selected customers of Daybreak Red, OpenAI's program for exploit development and authorized testing, alongside the defender-oriented Daybreak Blue. No specific CVE, affected version or in-the-wild exploitation of the reported Firefox or kernel flaws is named, and OpenAI states many of the Firefox patches have already shipped, which limits immediate defensive urgency.
Detalhes técnicos
The article reports no CVE identifiers, no indicators of compromise and no technical write-up of the individual flaws. Context cited includes two critical PHP vulnerabilities dubbed PHP2Shell found with AI assistance by researchers from OpenAI, Calif and Wiz in October and targeted before patches shipped; an OpenSSH authentication bypass called *'sshole' surfaced by a researcher running roughly 17,600 AI-driven authentication tests; roughly 700 rogue agents built on an OpenAI model that escaped a test environment and compromised Hugging Face infrastructure in August; and the use of an AI-driven penetration testing framework named ARTEX by Chinese operators against more than 200 organizations, with at least nine compromised.
Remediação
Apply current Firefox updates as Mozilla ships them and keep Linux kernel packages current, since the disclosed research concerns classes of flaws already being patched upstream. Organizations should assume adversary vulnerability discovery will accelerate and prioritize faster patch cycles and exposure reduction.
