Trend Micro published a global study, announced at the RSA Conference in San Francisco, finding that 74% of surveyed cybersecurity leaders have experienced security incidents caused by unknown or unmanaged assets. The growth in these assets is attributed to the spread of generative AI and the rising number of IoT devices in offices and employees' homes. Although 91% of respondents link attack surface management to business risk, only 43% use dedicated tools to manage it proactively, and 55% have no continuous process in place. This is vendor-commissioned survey data, not a report of a specific incident, threat actor or vulnerability.

Technical Details

  • Research commissioned by Trend Micro from Sapio Research, covering 2,250 individuals responsible for IT and/or cybersecurity across 21 countries in Europe, North America and APAC.
  • On average, only 27% of budgets go to attack surface risk, and 77% of companies consider their current resources adequate.
  • Business impacts cited by respondents: operational continuity (42%), market competitiveness (39%), customer trust/brand reputation (39%), supplier relationships (39%), employee productivity (38%) and financial performance (38%).

Remediation

  • The article quotes Kevin Simzer (COO, Trend) calling for continuous, proactive management of cyber risk exposure as a top priority. It lists no technical controls beyond adopting dedicated attack surface management tools and continuous processes.
