G7 finance ministers agreed to hold simulation exercises to test responses to cyberattacks enabled by artificial intelligence. Japan's Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama announced the decision after a G7 finance ministers and central bank governors meeting held alongside the IMF annual meeting in Bangkok. The move follows an IMF warning that an AI-enabled attack on a critical service at a financial institution could undermine confidence in the sector. A Japanese Ministry of Finance official said the results will be used to check how effective existing protocols are and to guide revisions of response manuals. Depending on the simulation, private financial institutions may also take part.

Technical Details

  • No specific incident, threat actor, vulnerability or IOC is described; this is a preparedness initiative.
  • Stated concerns include AI-enabled cyberattacks on banks and autonomous AI agents able to compromise global financial stability.
  • The Bank of England is working with banks on system recovery options after severe cyber incidents. Its deputy governor said banks can no longer assume their defenses are immune to AI-enabled attacks.

Remediation

  • The article gives no technical remediation. The planned exercises are meant to validate and update incident response playbooks before a real attack occurs.
