Microsoft fixes classic Outlook bug that hid Copilot buttons for licensed Windows users
Microsoft has fixed a known issue in the classic Outlook desktop client for Windows that hid the Copilot Chat and Copilot buttons for users with a Copilot Chat (Basic) or Microsoft 365 Copilot (Premium) license. Microsoft first announced a fix in June through a service change, but the bug resurfaced after recent updates and was investigated again last month. Microsoft attributes the fault to Outlook failing to retrieve required account information from the user's Outlook profile. This is a functional bug with no reported security impact, exploitation or threat actor involvement.
Detalhes técnicos
- Symptoms: the Copilot button was missing above the ribbon and from the left app bar or More Apps area. In Add Apps, selecting Open did nothing, and the command was grayed out in ribbon customization.
- Copilot remained available through Outlook on the web and the standalone Copilot app or web experience.
- Microsoft notes that a missing button can also stem from licensing, Microsoft 365 app configuration, update channel, privacy settings or other environmental factors.
Remediação
- Apply the latest classic Outlook updates containing the fix.
- Temporary workaround: in classic Outlook, go to File > Options > Advanced and enable "Show Apps in Outlook" under "Outlook panes".
- Alternatively, use the new Outlook client or Outlook Web Access (OWA), which are not affected, or create a new Outlook profile.
- Follow Microsoft's Copilot troubleshooters and the guidance on finding and enabling the missing Copilot button in Microsoft 365 apps.
