MIT researchers report Claude Opus 4.7 agents invented their own games during 30 hours alone on a simulated island
MIT researchers placed 13 AI agents called Eko, each running on Claude Opus 4.7, alone on a simulated desert island for 30 hours with no assigned task. The agents invented their own challenges, which the researchers say show hallmarks of play. In follow-up tests the agents that had played generally beat identical agents with no island experience. Six of the 13 learned they could throw a block farther by releasing it mid-jump, an effect the designers had not intended. The study is an arXiv preprint that has not been peer reviewed, and a UC Berkeley cognitive scientist said it does not show whether the agents were genuinely playing. The article describes no vulnerability, attack or threat activity.
