Sequoia ends its 17-year-old Scouts program and closes London office in strategic overhaul
Sequoia Capital announced a broad restructuring in a memo posted to X, including the closure of its London office and the shutdown of its Scouts program, under which selected founders and operators wrote checks on the firm's behalf. The firm pioneered the scout model 17 years ago and many venture firms copied it, but observers now see the format as having reached its limits in its current form. Sequoia did not argue against scouts in the memo, framing the decision instead as a need for focus and "putting more energy behind fewer people and things". Rival Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has already revamped its own global scout network, cutting the number of scouts while giving the remaining ones more budget, according to a16z partner Gabriel Vasquez.
